Roundup of jailbreaking, unlocking the iPhone 2.0.2 2G and 3G so far…

30 August 2008 49 Comments

Update (14/09/2008): The subsequent version of the iPhone firmware, version 2.1 can now be jailbroken, unlocked! More details - Roundup of jailbreaking, unlocking the iPhone 2.1 2G and 3G…
It’s been sometime since our last round up for jailbreaking the latest iPhone firmware, this latest round up will summarise for you the latest you need to know for jailbreaking the latest iPhone firmware, firmware version 2.0.2.

Since Apple’s update was released in an attempt to fix some of the issues relating to 3G on the iPhone well over a week ago, there have since been version updates released for various jailbreaking tools such as the Pwnage Tool, WinPwn and QuickPwn… So let’s get cracking!

  • Pwnage Tool 2.0.3.1

So let’s first talk about the latest Pwnage Tool from the iPhone Dev Team, it’s latest is now version 2.0.3.1, this latest release includes an updated Installer app. Though it’s the newest from the iPhone Dev Team, it will only jailbreak and NOT unlock the iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.0, 2.0.1 or the latest 2.0.2. If the first gen iPhone (2G) is the one you have, this latest Pwnage Tool will jailbreak and unlock your iPhone running either firmware 1.1.4 or 1.1.5 or 2.x including iPhone firmware 2.0.1 and 2.0.2.

The latest Pwnage Tool will also include multi language support, these include, German, French, Hungarian and Russian. Please be aware that Pwnage Tool is only compatible for Mac users and not Windows users (use the tools below if you’re running Windows).

Download the Pwnage Tool version 2.0.3.1 here

  • QuickPwn Tool 2.0.2

quickpwn-pwned-firmware-201-iphone-touch-ipod Roundup of jailbreaking, unlocking the iPhone 2.0.2 2G and 3G so far… The Previous version of the QuickPwn Tool did not support Mac users and was originally made for just Windows users. The latest version 2.0.2 supports both OS now, and can be used to jailbreak the latest firmware 2.0.2 by anyone. Don’t be confused, QuickPwn Tool is not a replacement for the Pwnage Tool. Think of QuickPwn as the little brother of Pwnage Tool, err… In other words, the Pwnage Tool is still much more powerful.

As we mentioned in previous posts, QuickPwn makes it quicker and easier to jailbreak iPhone as it does not need iTunes based full restore. Pwnage Tool on the other hand is more powerful, because it allows you to create custom iPhone firmware versions which can then be used to pwn the iPhone to jailbreak it.

The Mac version of QuickPwn Tool will work on iPhone running firmware 2.0.2 and it’s interface is similar to the Pwnage Tool. The latest Windows version of the QuickPwn Tool has now been updated to work on iPhone running iPhone firmwares 2.x (2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2).

Just like the Pwnage Tool, QuickPwn Tool will only jailbreak and NOT unlock the iPhone 3G. If the first gen iPhone (2G) is the one you have, it will jailbreak and unlock your iPhone.

  • WinPwn Tool 2.5

5a142_winpwn Roundup of jailbreaking, unlocking the iPhone 2.0.2 2G and 3G so far… The WinPwn Tool to me has never attracted as much attention in comparison to the creations of the iPhone Dev Team, especially now that QuickPwn is available. Nevertheless for Windows users, the latest WinPwn Tool, version 2.5 is available to jailbreak your iPhone running 2.x (2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2).

WinPwn 2.5 can be used to jailbreak, unlock and activate first gen iPhones running firmware 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. It can also be used to jailbreak iPhone 3G running firmware 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 but cannot unlock iPhone 3G.

The latest version of the tool comes with an all new user interface and includes the following features:

  • QuickPwn Support for iPhone firmware 2.0/2.0.1/2.0.2
  • Root partition resize support
  • Installer support
  • Basic / Expert modes
  • Wizard style interface
  • Automatic updater
  • Support for WinXP and Vista 32/64bit

You can use WinPwn in either Basic or Expert mode. The basic mode is like the easy mode where it uses default settings. All you need to do is build a custom firmware image and restore your iPhone using that custom firmware via iTunes. The expert mode as the name suggests gives you more control over the process.

You can download WinPwn 2.5 here. You must uninstall any older version of WinPwn before you install the latest version.

Should you choose to use WinPwn, here are some links in case you require further support:

    Editorial Staff Reply:

Hi MC, thanks alot for your comment. With no new updates to date, the above methods are still the latest and in my opinion still most reliable, with plenty of support from the online community.

In the situation you have described, I would recommend you use QuickPwn instead of WinPwn, it’s pretty quick and easy to use, you should have no problems at all, it has run quite smoothly over the many times that I’ve tried it. Remember to backup everything first though! Good luck and feel free to let us know how it went!

I am going to eBay my iPhone 2g (AT&T) (FW 2.02) and upgrade to the 3g. I want to jailbreak and unlock the phone, and make sure that wi-fi and youtube will work for someone else on a carrier other than AT&T.

Should I jailbreak/unlock my current phone before or after I buy and activate my 3g?

I have a PC with Vista - should I use quickpwn or WinPwn? Are there any special steps to take to make sure youtube and wi-fi will work?

    [Reply to this comment...]

    Editorial Staff Reply:

Hi tmac, I’ve just had a quick browse through our iPhone jailbreaking and unlocking resources and I’m pleased to let you know there aren’t any latest updates which means the above methods are still most up to date for jailbreaking or unlocking your iPhone.

I understand the situation you have is that you wish to upgrade to 3G iPhone. In reply to your question, “Should I jailbreak/unlock my current phone before or after I buy and activate my 3g?”. Do you mean you would like to jailbreak and unlock your first gen 2G iPhone before selling on eBay?

    [Reply to this comment...]

    tmac Reply:

Yes you are correct - I want to unlock and jailbreak my 2g phone to increase it’s resale value on ebay. I checked some ebay stats using hammertap to confirm that unlocked phones fetch a premium over locked phones.

What I meant by my question “Should I jailbreak/unlock my current phone before or after I buy and activate my 3g?” was that I was curious if the jailbreaking and unlocking process is influenced by whether or not the phone is currently on the AT&T network.

Option 1 = jailbreak and unlock iphone 2g. Then buy 3g.

Option 2 = Buy the 3g, and the store activates it. Then when I get home, jailbreak and unlocked the 2g.

Is there a difference between option 1 and 2?

    Thanks!

    [Reply to this comment...]

    Editorial Staff Reply:

Hi, thanks for clearing that up. In our opinion, yes it would definitely help you resell your existing iPhone on the internet if you had it jailbroken and unlocked, it’s want everyone wants these days, just not Apple.

In terms of option 1 and 2, I see no difference in that, either way you’ll be jailbreaking and unlocking your 2G iPhone just in different sequence, it doesn’t make much difference. Hope this helps.

    Hi,
Thanks a lot for this information.

Can you please list the features that will be LOST upon jailbreaking the iphone 3G?

Lets say I will use an AT&T sim card on iPhone 3G that does not have a $30 data plan. Which features will I be able to use? and Which features I will not be able to use? (without the data plan)

What I intend to do is…use the iphone 3g mainly as a phone with wifi, use it as a music/video player over wifi ..and use its apps. What about GPS? will it work without the data plan? Wot about accessing youtube on its wifi network? Basically, can’t afford to pay $30/month …sticking with A&T service is not a problem.

    [Reply to this comment...]

    Editorial Staff Reply:

Hi again Shoaib, just wanted to show you the exact steps we take when we use QuickPwn and we’ve done it a number of times successfully:

    1 Download it
    2 Extract it
3 Start iTunes, update your iPhone/iPod Touch to firmware 2.0.2

4 Then remember to dissconnect iPhone/iPod Touch but keep iTunes open

5 Now open quickpwn.exe and it should run smoothly!

    Hope this helps you.

Let me tell you what happened actually

I was having the firmware of 1.1.4 and when i connected my phone in itune it suggested me to update it to 2.0.2 and i did that

as soon as i completed my phone got locked

now i started searching software to unlock it and found this article

I just did the same as u suggested but of no help

I updated the firmware 2 days back and also restarted the system

what should i do in this case? coz its still giving me the same error even if itunes is open

    [Reply to this comment...]

    Editorial Staff Reply:

Hi Shoaib, I’ve seen this situation happen in some Windows users but not all, quite strange.

From the sources we look at, people are discussing whether this is related to running QuickPwn on Vista, while some say that the steps we described above helped avoided this from happening, it clearly didn’t apply to you.

In this case, I would then suggest you to resort to choosing WinPwn, though abit more complicated, it does still jailbreak and unlock your iPhone, so at the end of the day, produces the same effect that you are hoping to achieve with QuickPwn. Do let us know how it goes!

    Hello,

I have an iPHONE with firmware version 1.1.4 or rather call it as 1.x.x. Will the Windows version (WinPwn) work for jail breaking and activation to use it with any GSM provider?

    Thanks and Regards,
    William

    [Reply to this comment...]

    Editorial Staff Reply:

Hi William Daniel, thanks for your message. I understand that you have the iPhone 2G since you pointed out that your firmware is 1.1.4, to my understanding WinPwn will NOT work for firmwares before 2.0 but it will jailbreak and unlock your iPhone for use with any provider. So my suggestion is that you update your iPhone to the latest firmware first then jailbreak it using WinPwn if that’s the one you’ve chosen.

    [Reply to this comment...]

    William Daniel Reply:

Thank you for the response. If I understand this correctly, I have a working phone from AT&T of make 2G Apple Iphone (firmware 1.1.4). I could connect to iTunes 7.7 and update it to 2.0.2 and then run WinPwn using the Boot Loaders 3.9 and 4.6 and a IPSW file.

Am I right? To re-iterate I want to UNLOCK the phone and ACTIVATE it to use it with any GSM provider.

If I am being stupid, please forgive and consider as I am new to this.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    William

    [Reply to this comment...]

    Editorial Staff Reply:

Hi again :) No, you are not stupid and you are perfectly correct :)

Just make sure though, when you update using iTunes, it’s not trying to update you with firmware 2.1, as that’s the latest that just came out this week, there is a new jailbreaking method for that but we haven’t tried it yet and as a beginner yourself, we would suggest you choose the method that’s been used by many iPhone users for the past few weeks!

And remember to backup! Gd luck!

    [Reply to this comment...]

    William Daniel Reply:

Thank you for the precautionary information but, now I have an issue. If I try and update, I might get the 2.1 option only and as a result, it would not be right for me to go ahead and jailbreak and then unlock because you stated that there is a different method of doing it for 2.1.

If I do not update, will I be able to jailbreak and unlock the phone completely from firmware version 1.1.4 and use WinPwn with a target firmware as 2.0.2?

It would be great if you could tell me what I should do.

    Thanks again!!
    William

    [Reply to this comment...]

    William Daniel Reply:

Well I got the answer. To install update 2.1, I need to have iTunes 8.0 and I will not install that until I am done with my unlocking.

    Right??
    :)

    [Reply to this comment...]

    Editorial Staff Reply:

Hi! Yes, you are correct, as long as you don’t have iTunes 8.0 which has just been released, it shouldn’t prompt you to install 2.1 firmware.

To my understanding, WinPwn will need at least firmware 2.x.x to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 2G. So you will at least need to update your iPhone first to 2.0.2. Once you’ve done that, you should be able to follow the jailbreaking process using WinPwn.

As I mentioned earlier, there is a new method to jailbreak 2.1, it’s just at the very beginning stage, and with plenty of issues at the moment, it’s not advised if you don’t plan on getting your hands full with lots of iPhone errors!

But as soon as we see one that will work properly, we’ll publish it in our blog.

    Thanks again for your comment!

    [Reply to this comment...]

    William Daniel Reply:

Ok. I got the iPhone and do NOT have a SIM card in there. So I have emergency calls only and NO SIM CARD message showing up. I have version 2.0.2.

I have created a custom .IPSW. When I started the iTunes application version 7.7, it did not recognize the phone stating that there is no SIM CARD.

    What do I do??

    Thanks,
    William

    [Reply to this comment...]

    William Daniel Reply:

Well. I was able to jailbreak and unlock the iPHONE successfully. Do you know if I can update the software to version 2.1?

I used the pwnageTool and it told me to find the correct firmware bundle. So i downloaded it and now it is telling me it is the wrong firmware bundle. I dont know what i am doing wrong.

I was also wondering if i can just update my iphone on itunes version 8 to the new 2.1 and not have to unlock my phone again?

    [Reply to this comment...]

    Jason Reply:

Yes, i am still on 1.1.4. I downloaded firmware 2.1 onto my mac and was going through the process and it told me i had the wrong bundle. I was not sure if i should update the phone via itunes 8 to 2.1 first then go through it again.

i dont want to have to unlock the phone again if i dont have to…..

    [Reply to this comment...]

    Editorial Staff Reply:

Hi Jason, I think I see your problem. Though these two tools will jailbreak and unlock your current firmware version (1.1.4), what you want is to have 2.1. So you see, in order to do that need to, you need to have already updated to 2.1 via iTunes 8 in the first place inorder to jailbreak and unlock firmware 2.1 (hope this makes sense to you).

This process WILL lock up your phone temporarily and you will loose your 3rd party apps if you are running them. Because your phone at the moment is already unlocked and jailbroken with ziphone, i suspect this is where the error is coming from.

So once you update via iTunes 8, I believe everything should go smoothly, as the latest two tools as announced by iPhone Dev Team will NOT require any additional patching for iTunes.

Of course, everything is not without a risk, so remember to fully backup your own data first!

ok so i did all the things that was told and it completed the whole thing without a hitch. but now that the update is complete my phone is now locked. i thought that the pwnagetool would also unlock the phone again??? did i miss something?

Hi APS, thanks for your comment. I gather from your comment that you have the iPhone 2G which was previously unlocked with ZiPhone, so now you wanted to update to firmware 2.1.

Can I just ask you, after you updated to 2.1 which QuickPwn file did you download and where did you download it from? I’m asking due to there currently being a large number of fake Pwnage and QuickPwn tools out on the web. And the problem you are describing seems very strange and doesn’t fit with what we’ve encountered before.

Also if you downloaded it from the page you are currently commenting on, on our site, then you will most definitely have downloaded the wrong version of QuickPwn for your iPhone, because the file links we have on this page are for 2.0.2 and not 2.1 The latest download links for 2.1 are here: http://blog.gadgetlite.com/2008/09/14/roundup-jailbreaking-unlocking-3/

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my comment.

just i am giving you more detail after reading some of the comments

i did use QuickPwn21-1 and was able to get capacity to 7.1 g ( before upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.0.2 i was using pc suite and podshare and they work great)

the problem even though that pc suite said it made the transfer(music and video) and that shows in setting about meaning that the capacity went down to 5.3

but when i tried to access the ipod there were no music or video as usual with 1.1.4

i Notice the following when i use itune 7.7:

1- itune error message saying itune cannot read the contents of this iphone

2- in the summary it said name : iphone, but capacity: n/a

3- could not use sharepod anymore cause it gets an error with exception system.io error and it forced me to close it

back to iphone I am not sure where pc suite saved the music and video since it did take 1..2 g from the capacity

you mentioned that i have to copy the mdeia back

    i tried, but no lick

do u recommend any program to do that, or any clue why itune can not read iphone

by the way in my computer there are 2 icon for the iphone

1- apple iphone, 2 usb video device

thanks, by the way i do have the time to test any thing for you for free
